Karen holds a Bachelor of Physical Education from McMaster University and graduated in 2002 from the Canadian Therapeutic College and Hydrotherapy in Burlington. She is a Certified Active Release Provider, Contemporary Acupuncture for Health Care provider, and Kinesio-Tape provider. Currently a board member of the National and Provincial Canadian Sport Massage Therapy Association, Karen has worked with athletes at the local level in their developmental stages, University athletes at the FISU games in South Korea in 2015, Pan American Games in Hamilton 2015, Para-Olympic Athletes in Vancouver in 2004. Along with her current practice at Main West Massage, Karen treats all conditions from headaches, muscle tightness, to post-operative joint replacements. She combines and incorporates many different techniques and modalities to provide specific care to each of her clients to provide the most effective treatments possible.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of the course the participants will:

  • gain knowledge, understanding and skills required to plan, apply and evaluate sport massage methods,
  • understand the fundamentals and evaluation of sport massage
  • be able to devise and apply sport massage therapy protocols (pre/inter/post/maintenance), with emphasis on muscle groups, positioning, handling and sequence of techniques,
  • gain competency skills in Swedish massage techniques and learn enhanced sport massage techniques ,
  • gain insight and understanding of various indications and contradictions related to sport massage practices in athletics,
  • develop an understanding of the psychological and physiological components of sport massage (ie. pre/inter/post/maintenance)
  • Gain insight and knowledge on the mechanical, reflexive and psychological effects of common massage techniques in sports,
  • understand the role of sport massage and the added value to achieve peak performance in the athlete.

Course Description:

 

This practical and interactive 1 day course is designed for qualified health professionals, who are keen in expanding their tool belt, to include the appreciation and added value to achieve peak performance in the athlete through sport massage techniques.  Following completion of the course, you will be able to build upon your existing knowledge to achieve a comprehensive understanding of sport massage. You will gain both clinical and practical knowledge, understanding and skills, required to execute a sport massage therapy treatment. Emphasis will be placed on the competency skills, enhanced sport massage techniques, handling and sequence of sport massage techniques, indications and contradictions, as well as the understanding of the psychological and physiological components of sport massage.
