Games Application Rules & Regulations

SPC “2 in 5” Rule (as of January 1, 2020)

Major Games (i.e. Olympics, Paralympics, Commonwealth, Pan American & Para Pan American)

Physiotherapists applying to Major Games are only eligible to be selected twice (2) in a five (5) year period within the same role (“2 in 5” rule). The 5-year period (a ‘year’ being defined as 12 months) will be calculated by counting backwards from January 1^st of the year the Games are taking place. 

For example, Diploma holders selected to attend a Major Games as a Core Health Services Team Therapist*, Chief Therapist or Assistant Chief Therapist twice in the same role in a 5-year period would all be considered ineligible to be selected for another Major Games in the same role (Core Health Services Team Therapist*, Chief Therapist or Assistant Chief Therapist) in the same 5-year period, i.e. “2 in 5” rule calculation. 

*Core Health Service Team Therapists include those selected either as a physiotherapist or as an athletic therapist (i.e. SPC member who is also CATA certified and is selected through CATA)

Developmental Games (i.e. Youth Olympic Games, Jeux de la Francophonie, FISU/World Universiade)**

Physiotherapists applying to Developmental Games are only eligible to be selected twice (2) in a five (5) year period within the same role (“2 in 5” rule). **NB: The “2 in 5” rule does not apply to ’Canada Games’ nor does it apply to ‘Other Developmental Games’ (i.e. Arctic Winter Games, Commonwealth Youth Games, Gay Games, Invictus Games, Maccabiah Games, World Military Games, Indigenous Games, World Masters Games, World Police & Fire Games).

(The reason Canada Games fits in this category is to permit SPC Diploma holders to continue gaining Multi-sport Games experience while acting as Mentors to newer candidates.)

2020 Call for Nominations the SPC Board of Directors

The SPC Nomination Chairperson is putting this call out for interested members to consider joining the SPC Executive Committee. For 2020 there are 3 open Committee positions.

Members wishing to be nominated should fill out the attached nomination form, candidate statement and issues of the day document. Elections will be held at the SPC Annual Members Meeting (AMM) at the Fairmont Banff Springs Resort on April 30, 2020 (in conjunction with the CASEM Annual Symposium). Candidates will be required to attend in person or via webcast/skype to introduce themselves to the AMM attendees.

Successful candidates will hold their positions for two years commencing at the Annual Members Meeting.

About the Role

The Committee has exciting conversations and implements tactics that contribute to the advancement of the Sport Physiotherapy profession. Interacting with stakeholders and members helps inform you as a board member. Committee members are also eligible to take the Chair or Chair-Elect role in years it is open for election, this is a wonderful way to interact with the all components of CPA.

SPC is entering the end of our strategic plan. Highlights include revamping the Credential Exam Syllabus and Reference list, making applications to Major Games more equitable and continuing to build our SPC Profile, in particular our external profile.

Time Commitment

The SPC Executive Committee meets twice a year in person, in the late fall for a strategic planning session and at the SPC AMM in the spring. In addition, the Committee meets via teleconference 4-6 additional times throughout the year as required. The next SPC in person meeting is TBA but may be in conjunction with the American Team Concept Conference in December and requires you to travel to the meeting. Expenses related to board travel are covered in the SPC budget.

Call for Chief Reviewer – POSITION FILLED

SPC is seeking passionate members of the Sport Physio community to join in the role of Chief Reviewer to help develop, lead and oversee a new evidence-based review in Sports Medicine. The goal of this initiative, also known as The Sports Review, is to help disseminate information down from research to practice to help members remain current and informed in their clinical decision making.

The Sports Review will be a quarterly publication providing an overview of research published on a particular topic, drawn from article(s) and/or systematic review(s) found in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The candidate will be one of two Chief Reviewers overseeing four working groups across Canada, each of which will be responsible for one review annually.  The role of the Chief Reviewers will be to liaise with all working groups to aid in the completion of each edition, while ensuring consistency between them. Duties may include, but are not limited to, template development, assisting with topic selection and publication of each edition to share with SPC members.

The candidate should have experience & special interest in research with understanding and skill in critical appraisal. All candidates will be considered; however, preference will be given to those with one or more of the following qualifications:

• Research based Masters
• PhD (or PhD Candidate)
• Doctorate of Physical Therapy
• FCAMPT with successful completion of the mandatory Research Methods course
• Clinical Masters in Advanced Orthopedics (MClSc or equivalent)

Call for Editors – STILL OPEN

SPC is seeking passionate members of the Sport Physio community to join in the role of Editor to review articles and write up summaries for a new evidence-based review in Sports Medicine. The candidate would be working in a working group to complete the review; with each working being responsible for one to two reviews per year. The goal of this initiative, also known as The Sports Review, is to help disseminate information down from research to practice to help members remain current and informed in their clinical decision making.

The Sports Review will be a quarterly publication providing an overview of research published on a particular topic, drawn from article(s) and/or systematic review(s) found in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The candidate will be one of eight to twelve reviewers across Canada. The candidate will be assigned to working group of two to three, with each working group being responsible for one to two reviews annually.  The role of the Editor will be to liaise with your working groups and the Chief Editors to aid in the completion of the edition. Duties may include, but are not limited to, assisting with topic selection, reviewing article(s), writing up a review, doing interactive/clinically applicable photos/videos, communication with team and Chief Editor, for the assigned edition of the review to share with SPC members.
