Although clinical and return to play decision are made on an individualized basis, this paper outlines the most recent consensus on topics concerning sport related concussion. Topics covered in the paper include:
- return to play issues
- simple versus complex concussion
- long-term issues
- pediatric considerations
- future directions
The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 2 (SCAT2) is presented in this paper. This newly developed tool evolved from the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) and includes symptom evaluation, physical signs score, Glasgow coma scale (GCS), Sideline Assessment-Maddocks Score, Cognitive Assessment, Balance examination (based on the Balance Error Scoring System) and a Coordination examination. A total score is calculated out of 100 by adding up all of the subscales (except the Maddocks score). The area of sport concussion is continually evolving and this paper can be used in conjunction with individualized exams by sport physiotherapists in the assessment and treatment of this commonly occurring condition.
